When word of the Pony Express being formed reached Clay Roswell in Texas, he decided to get a job as a rider. He was told his best chance for employment was along the desert stretch in Nevada Territory, so that was where he headed. Along the trail, he met two brothers, Jess and Hoke Pickard, and agreed to team up with them, at least as far as Salt Lake. They made camp one night in Weber Cañon, east of Salt Lake, but as Roswell lay in his blankets, the Pickards tried to club him to death. They stole his money and his horses and left him for dead. It took Roswell a long time to make it to Fort Churchill in Nevada Territory, and when he finally did, the Pony Express was shutting down and the only jobs available were with crews hired to string telegraph wire across the desert. And it was there in Fort Churchill that Roswell saw the Pickard brothers again, applying for work with the superintendent of the telegraph company. Roswell’s brawl with the brothers then and there made for an unlikely introduction to superintendent Jack Casement, but he liked what he saw in Roswell and offered him the job as wagon boss for the outfit. But the fight with the Pickards was not over, and conflict with Indians as well as an organized gang of hijackers would only add to the challenges now facing Roswell, a simple man looking for an honest wage. By:Meg Wolitzer
Published on 2013-04-09 by Penguin

Named a best book of the year by Entertainment Weekly, Time, and The Chicago Tribune, and named a notable book by The New York Times Book Review and The Washington Post “Remarkable . . . With this book [Wolitzer] has surpassed herself.”—The New York Times Book Review |A victory . . . The Interestings secures Wolitzer's place among the best novelists of her generation. . . . She's every bit as literary as Franzen or Eugenides. But the very human moments in her work hit you harder than the big ideas. This isn't women's fiction. It's everyone's.|—Entertainment Weekly (A) From Meg Wolitzer, the New York Times–bestselling author of The Female Persuasion, a novel that has been called |genius| (The Chicago Tribune), “wonderful” (Vanity Fair), |ambitious| (San Francisco Chronicle), and a “page-turner” (Cosmopolitan). The summer that Nixon resigns, six teenagers at a summer camp for the arts become inseparable. Decades later the bond remains powerful, but so much else has changed. In The Interestings, Wolitzer follows these characters from the height of youth through middle age, as their talents, fortunes, and degrees of satisfaction diverge. The kind of creativity that is rewarded at age fifteen is not always enough to propel someone through life at age thirty; not everyone can sustain, in adulthood, what seemed so special in adolescence. Jules Jacobson, an aspiring comic actress, eventually resigns herself to a more practical occupation and lifestyle. Her friend Jonah, a gifted musician, stops playing the guitar and becomes an engineer. But Ethan and Ash, Jules’s now-married best friends, become shockingly successful—true to their initial artistic dreams, with the wealth and access that allow those dreams to keep expanding. The friendships endure and even prosper, but also underscore the differences in their fates, in what their talents have become and the shapes their lives have taken. Wide in scope, ambitious, and populated by complex characters who come together and apart in a changing New York City, The Interestings explores the meaning of talent; the nature of envy; the roles of class, art, money, and power; and how all of it can shift and tilt precipitously over the course of a friendship and a life.

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Underground Railroad A pandemic has devastated the planet, sorting humanity into two types: the uninfected and the infected, the living and the living dead. Mark Spitz is a member of one of the three-person civilian sweeper units tasked with clearing lower Manhattan of the remaining feral zombies. Zone One unfolds over three surreal days in which Spitz is occupied with the mundane mission of straggler removal, the rigors of Post-Apocalyptic Stress Disorder (PASD), and the impossible task of coming to terms with a fallen world. The classic, magnificent bestselling novel about Richard III, now in a special thirtieth anniversary edition with a new preface by the author In this triumphant combination of scholarship and storytelling, Sharon Kay Penman redeems Richard III—vilified as the bitter, twisted, scheming hunchback who murdered his nephews, the princes in the Tower—from his maligned place in history. Born into the treacherous courts of fifteenth-century England, in the midst of what history has called The War of the Roses, Richard was raised in the shadow of his charismatic brother, King Edward IV. Loyal to his friends and passionately in love with the one woman who was denied him, Richard emerges as a gifted man far more sinned against than sinning. With revisions throughout and a new author's preface discussing the astonishing discovery of Richard's remains five centuries after his death, Sharon Kay Penman's brilliant classic is more powerful and glorious than ever.

Published on 2012-07-01 by Ignition Books

Out of the crucible of war has come a long list of best-selling, award-winning, and long-remembered novels: The Red Badge Of Courage, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Caine Mutiny, Fields of Fire and The Thirteenth Valley. But none so far has ever captured the power and drama of the United States Marine Corps's ill-fated mission to end the war for Lebanon, which ended in the barracks bombing that killed almost three hundred Marines. For Sergeant David Griffin, a |peace-time| Marine, Beirut was the chance to prove himself capable to the generation of Marines who had been bloodied in the Vietnam War. For Corporal Steven Downs, Beirut was a struggle to separate the civilian from the soldier, his distrust of the politicians' decisions from the military mission. For all of the Marines serving in Lebanon, it was another war in a foreign country where the enemy could be anywhere or anyone. Faced with Griffin's court-martial for engaging the enemy against orders, these two young men find themselves questioning their faith in themselves, their commanders, and eventually that which above all else they must have faith in--the Corps. With the insight that only a Marine Corps veteran could have, C. X. Moreau portrays the men who fought and died in Beirut with skill and ability that bring home to the reader the true meaning of Semper Fi. |Affecting . . . A haunting slice of military life that unsparingly catalogues the risks, rewards, pain and joys of casting one's lot with warriors.|--Kirkus Reviews |Moreau uses the building block of authentic detail to craft a solid take about a little-known, undeclared war. His debut should attract readers seeking to understand how the U.S. military is waging peace in the Middle East.|--Publishers Weekly |Outstanding! A classic in, yet above and beyond, the war genre. Thank you, C. X. Moreau, for an enlightening work.|--John M. Del Vecchio, New York Times best-selling author of The Thirteenth Valley and For The Sake Of All Living Things |With his first book, Distant Valor, C. X. Moreau, joins the company of top rank military novelists. He shows the reader what it really means to be a Marine.|--W.E.B. Griffin, New York Times best-selling author of |The Corps| and |The Brotherhood of War| series |A clear picture of Marines in action and the politicization that often causes bungled operations. The picture is harsh; but it depicts the anguish and humanity of the Marines who so gallantly bear the brunt of carrying the flag to foreign shores. This first novel rings with the authenticity that only a serving Marine could supply.|--The Florida Times-Union |A novel of character, as are all great war novels...cuts to the heart of the military experience in our time . . .|--San Jose Mercury News |An absolutely authentic portrayal of the Marines who endured the mud and the blood in Beirut. As captain of a ship offshore, I watched it; C. X. Moreau obviously lived it, up close and personal.|--P.T. Deutermann, best-selling author of Scorpion in the Sea |C. X. Moreau has seen the military future first-hand in Beirut. In an age of fateful involvements in the wars of others, the terrible dilemmas described so ably in Distant Valor are too often the essence of duty for today's Marines and soldiers. This book is as authentic as they come, heartrending and true, exciting and brutally tragic. It is a worthy monument to heroes cast aside.|--Ralph Peters, New York Times best-selling author of The War In 2020

Slade House PDF
By:David Mitchell
Published on 2015-10-27 by Random House

The New York Times bestseller by the author of The Bone Clocks and Cloud Atlas | Named One of the Best Books of the Year by San Francisco Chronicle, NPR, Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, The Telegraph, National Post, BookPage, and Kirkus Reviews Keep your eyes peeled for a small black iron door. Down the road from a working-class British pub, along the brick wall of a narrow alley, if the conditions are exactly right, you’ll find the entrance to Slade House. A stranger will greet you by name and invite you inside. At first, you won’t want to leave. Later, you’ll find that you can’t. Every nine years, the house’s residents—an odd brother and sister—extend a unique invitation to someone who’s different or lonely: a precocious teenager, a recently divorced policeman, a shy college student. But what really goes on inside Slade House? For those who find out, it’s already too late. . . . Spanning five decades, from the last days of the 1970s to the present, leaping genres, and barreling toward an astonishing conclusion, this intricately woven novel will pull you into a reality-warping new vision of the haunted house story—as only David Mitchell could imagine it. Praise for Slade House “A fiendish delight . . . Mitchell is something of a magician.”—The Washington Post “Entertainingly eerie . . . We turn to [Mitchell] for brain-tickling puzzle palaces, for character studies and for language.”—Chicago Tribune “A ripping yarn . . . Like Shirley Jackson’s Hill House or the Overlook Hotel from Stephen King’s The Shining, [Slade House] is a thin sliver of hell designed to entrap the unwary. . . . As the Mitchellverse grows ever more expansive and connected, this short but powerful novel hints at still more marvels to come.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Like Stephen King in a fever . . . manically ingenious.”—The Guardian (U.K.) “A haunted house story that savors of Dickens, Stephen King, J. K. Rowling and H. P. Lovecraft, but possesses more psychic voltage than any of them.”—Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “Tightly crafted and suspenseful yet warmly human . . . the ultimate spooky nursery tale for adults.”—The Huffington Post “Diabolically entertaining . . . dark, thrilling, and fun . . . a thoroughly entertaining ride full of mind games, unexpected twists, and even a few laughs.”—The Daily Beast “Plants died, milk curdled, and my children went slightly feral as I succumbed to the creepy magic of David Mitchell’s Slade House. It’s a wildly inventive, chilling, and—for all its otherworldliness—wonderfully human haunted house story. I plan to return to its clutches quite often.”—Gillian Flynn, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Gone Girl and The Grownup “I gulped down this novel in a single evening. Painstakingly imagined and crackling with narrative velocity, it’s a Dracula for the new millennium, a reminder of how much fun fiction can be.”—Anthony Doerr, author of All the Light We Cannot See, winner of the Pulitzer Prize “David Mitchell doesn’t break rules so much as he proves them to be inhibitors to lively intelligent fiction.”—#1 New York Times bestselling author Dean Koontz From the Hardcover edition.

“Zimmer demonstrates why he’s one of the more interesting voices in Western fiction.” —Booklist “I've got something I want to say right up front,” says Boone McCallister, as he speaks into an Edison Dictaphone in 1937, “and that is that I did not feed David Klee to an alligator. That damned rumor has hounded me my whole life.” Back in 1864, with his father gone to fight for the South, young Boone embarks on a cattle drive with the McCallister’s Flat Iron Ranch in pioneer Florida, sending a herd of cattle to the Gulf port south of Tampa. Besides navigating dangerous cattle country, the headstrong, naïve Boone encounters vengeful Yankees, orders a hanging, braves alligators, and comes into contact with a group of swamp outlaws, the Klees, which begins a costly feud between the two families. When the Klees pillage and set fire to the Flat Iron Ranch, they also kidnap a comely slave girl, Lena. Against the odds, Boone must lead an operation to get her back, leading to a showdown in the middle of unfamiliar and unsettled outlaw territory that would one day become Miami.
